Volunteer with us!

We love working with volunteers from our community.

AKA Science Class Leader

AKA Science is an afterschool science enrichment program for diverse elementary and middle school youth that seeks enthusiastic Class Leaders to facilitate classes using established curriculum and a complete set of supplies at one or more Portland SUN community schools. Each AKA Science class serves 8-15 students between 4th-6th grades. Classes are 60 minutes long—usually held from 3:30PM-4:30PM (depending on the school)--and taught once per week for 7-8 weeks. In addition to teaching AKA Science, SUN schools may have other weekly hours available; including the opportunity to teach other courses and providing student supervision during supper and recess.

To get involved, please contact Kathryn Sechrist, AKA Science Program Manager at ksechrist@impactnw.org.

AKA Science Kit Building

AKA Science relies on our awesome volunteers to build the science kits we provide to K-8 youths at SUN community schools and Boys & Girls Club sites. Whether it's building 60 Biology kits or sorting through "chaos kits" (i.e. leftover kit supplies from previous terms), we seek individual and corporate volunteers to work with us 1-2 times a year as we sort, count, bundle, label, bag, package, and build our unique kits that serve 1,000 youths per year. Groups of up to 10 people are welcome to join us at our Dancing Tree office for 3- hour shifts during our Fall and Spring kit builds. We provide snacks, drinks, music, and sparkling conversation as we roll up our sleeves and give back to our community's youths! If you or your office team is interested in volunteering with us, please email Kathryn at ksechrist@impactnw.org.

AKA Science Program Support

AKA Science is always seeking volunteers to help us with general program support. From science activity testing to warehouse organization, from curriculum development to filming activities, and from Class Leader training to material pickup and delivery, we would love your help ensuring that our community's youths have access to this fun, hands-on science program! And bonus: it's a great way to build your resume, grow your skillset, and learn about careers in the nonprofit sector! If you are interested in donating your time to AKA Science by providing program support at our Dancing Tree office location, please email Kathryn at ksechrist@impactnw.org.
